I am a Meanjin | Brisbane-based artist exploring the uncomfortable and unknown through photography, video and projection, with a practice expanding into sound.
Coming from an urban background, I have often felt not entirely at ease in natural environments. I use that sense of alienation as an entry point for making work, placing myself in situations where discomfort becomes part of the experience. Earlier projects looked for the uneasy or eerie within landscape. More recently, that discomfort has shifted towards the act of photographing place itself. I have become more attentive to what it means to take an image from an encounter, carry it elsewhere and allow it to stand in for somewhere that is not mine to possess or fully know.
In recent projects, this way of working through unfamiliarity extended into sustained dialogue with an artist with whom I did not share a common first language. Our respective works responded to one another through visual and spatial exchange. The process made me more aware of assumptions embedded in my own sensory experience, and of the limits of what I can know from another position.
My Polaroid photography extends these questions. Each photograph is small and singular, existing first as a physical object rather than an endlessly reproducible image. I think of the photograph as the residue of an encounter with place rather than a description of it. Climate and photographic chemistry may leave traces, but the image remains partial and suggestive. I am interested in what happens when photographs leave the encounters in which they were made, how they circulate and what responsibilities accompany that circulation.
More recently, field recording has extended this enquiry from looking towards listening. Rather than treating recording as a neutral capture of place, I am interested in how we mediate what can be sensed, recorded and known.
