I am a Meanjin | Brisbane-based visual artist exploring the uncomfortable and unknown through photography, video, sound and projection.
Shaped by urban environments, I have an odd and awkward relationship with nature. I use this unease as an entry point, seeking the uncomfortable or eerie that lies beneath the skin of landscape. I am increasingly attentive to how bodies, materials and environments shape one another, and to the responsibilities involved in making images of places that are not mine to possess or fully know.
In recent projects I worked in sustained dialogue with an artist with whom I did not share a first language, expanding this enquiry towards the limits of perception. Our respective works responded to one other through visual, spatial and iterative exchange. This shifted my attention towards the assumptions embedded in my own sensory experience, and towards less dominant ways of knowing.
My Polaroid photography extends this enquiry. Against pristine, hyper-real representations of place, each photograph is small, imperfect and materially unstable. Each print becomes a residue of an encounter among climate, body, place and photographic chemistry. Nothing is fixed. The landscape remains partial, suggestive and unknowable.
More recently, field recording has further extended this enquiry from looking towards listening. Rather than treating recording as a neutral capture of place, I am interested in how we mediate what can be sensed, recorded and known.
